'Living a Nightmare': Loved Ones of Missing Teens Await News After Ski Resort Inferno
The relatives of teenagers lost after a devastating inferno at a venue in a Switzerland's winter destination are enduring an excruciating wait for official news and appealing for any details about their children publicly.
The blaze ripped through the a popular bar in Cans-Montana, located in the Alps of the Valais region, in the middle of the night of New Year's Day. Confirmed images show the ceiling igniting as beverages with fireworks are held aloft.
Officials have warned that it could take considerable time to formally name the those who perished of the tragedy, which claimed the lives of four dozen individuals and wounded another scores more. A spokesperson said on Friday that 113 of the those hurt have been accounted for, with work ongoing to locate the remaining few.
In the interim, relatives have been using the internet to appeal for information about their friends who were in attendance that night.
Desperate Searches for the Unaccounted For
The fate of Swiss national Arthur Brodard, 16, are still unconfirmed, according to an appeal from his family.
The resident of Lutry near the city, explained to a local newspaper that she had returned to the city to check whether he was in the hospital, while his other parent did the same in the capital, but could not find him.
"I'm living a nightmare, an ordeal. Either I find my son in the hospital mortuary, or I find him in a serious state. It's terrible," she told the paper.
She explained that some of his companions had been found with burns covering a significant portion of their bodies. "It's unspeakable; they endured hell."
The Italy's foreign ministry has confirmed that six of its nationals are still unaccounted for.
Among them is Emanuele Galeppini, a teenage sportsman, originally from Genoa but now living in Dubai.
The Italian Golf Federation has released a tribute that he is dead, without mentioning the fire, honoring a "talented young man who represented passion and authentic values."
His father, told media that his son was at the bar and was last in contact around midnight. An official spokesperson has stated that a official announcement of his death is still pending.
Other Missing Individuals
Giovanni Tamburi, 16, is also unaccounted for. His mother explained that he had been on vacation but had ventured out with a group and found himself at the bar.
"A close friend said they fled after the fire started and that he had his mobile with him, but then at a certain point he they were separated," she explained, adding he had been wearing a identifiable piece of jewelry.
One of his teachers stated, "I've always been struck by his good nature and positive demeanor, alongside great responsibility. He would frequently ask if get me a coffee."
Alice Kallergis, who holds dual Greek and Swiss citizenship but lives permanently in Switzerland, was also at the bar on New Year's Eve, according to media.
Her brother has published an urgent request online, saying the relatives has had "no updates" regarding the 15-year-old or the group she was with, who are also unaccounted for.
