Around 2,500 law enforcement officers participated in Tuesday's operation

Intense confrontations erupted when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho countered with shooting, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives said.

The International human rights organization expressed being "appalled" by the police operation, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Operation Impact

The informal settlements near Rio's airport is considered to be the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.

Government representatives confirmed at least 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Numerous individuals were injured, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Resident Accounts

Residents have compared the hillside area - home to about 300,000 people - to a "combat area" since the raid started.

Roads remain closed throughout the region.

Organized Crime Spread

The Red Command group has been increasing their territory across the Rio state, growing illegal substance trade paths and control of the hillside favelas.

Rio's police reported more than 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were seized in the raid, along with multiple guns.

Mission Context

The joint operation by civil and military police comes after a extended probe.

Numerous alleged criminals are considered affiliates of a group from the Brazilian state who are presently concealed in Rio de Janeiro.

Broader Context

Major law enforcement actions are not uncommon in the country prior to major international events in the South American nation.

The United Nations climate conference COP30 is taking place in the city of Belem in the north in November.
